âThose necklaces you wear have chosen each one of you for a reason and hold the power of the makers within them. With them you have the ability to complete the task for which you were brought here.â
Tad picked up his blue gem and squinting at it, cynically said, âSo this thingâs gunna get us that stone. And save the world. Yo-kay.â
Azildor sent him a disproving eye but replied, âYes, I believe the marks of the makers have chosen to recapture and destroy the stone that lies in the hands of evil and in consequence save Anelthalien from a bleak future.â
âSo like, we just go out and look for it or what?â asked Kindle, frustrated her ploy to escape home had not worked at all.
âNo, you need much preparation before you are ready for your journey. I will help you as I can. Come, the time you have is limited. You must begin to learn and discipline yourselves today,â Azildor told them as he started back to the wagon, but before he climbed onto the driverâs bench, he saw that none of them had followed. âWe must travel down the hill. Board the wagon,â he clarified.
Before anyone could make a move, Tad snapped, âNo. Iâm not goinâ to no school. Iâm done with thisââ He turned to Ella. âI said Iâd stick around until we saw your queen. Thatâs it. And sheâs dead, so Iâm out.â Tad grumbled something else about school as he resettled on the grass.

âEnd this,â Azildor sternly commanded as he came to stand between them. âIf you do not learn to band together, then nothing I teach you will be of any benefit. Mark this as your first lesson: one that lives against all others in this land will soon find a sword in his back, but one that lives in harmony will find the swords at his side.â Azildor turned his face on all of them as if he was searching their thoughts then said, âNow, again I ask you to board the wagon so I may begin to teach you to defend yourselves against your true enemies.â
âWhat? Youâre gunna teach us to fight?â Tad questioned in a much less hostile tone.
Azildor gave him a nod. âEven though I wish you never find it necessary, I would be sending you four to your deaths without skill in the sword.â
One of Tadâs sinister but giddy grins crawled onto his face, and he led the way to the wagon. Kindle couldnât help but smile at his sudden change of heart and Ellaâs renewed bafflement at it.
âBoys are stupid,â Kindle whispered to Ella as they started for the wagon as well. Ella gave her a confused look but let a chuckle replace it. Once they had all found
