“Those necklaces you wear have chosen each one of you for a reason and hold the power of the makers within them. With them you have the ability to complete the task for which you were brought here.”

Tad picked up his blue gem and squinting at it, cynically said, “So this thing’s gunna get us that stone. And save the world. Yo-kay.”

Azildor sent him a disproving eye but replied, “Yes, I believe the marks of the makers have chosen to recapture and destroy the stone that lies in the hands of evil and in consequence save Anelthalien from a bleak future.”

“So like, we just go out and look for it or what?” asked Kindle, frustrated her ploy to escape home had not worked at all.

“No, you need much preparation before you are ready for your journey. I will help you as I can. Come, the time you have is limited. You must begin to learn and discipline yourselves today,” Azildor told them as he started back to the wagon, but before he climbed onto the driver’s bench, he saw that none of them had followed. “We must travel down the hill. Mark this as your first lesson: one that lives against all others in this land will soon find a sword in his back, but one that lives in harmony will find the swords at his side.” Azildor turned his face on all of them as if he was searching their thoughts then said, “Now, again I ask you to board the wagon so I may begin to teach you to defend yourselves against your true enemies.”

“What? You’re gunna teach us to fight?” Tad questioned in a much less hostile tone.

Azildor gave him a nod. “Even though I wish you never find it necessary, I would be sending you four to your deaths without skill in the sword.”

One of Tad’s sinister but giddy grins crawled onto his face, and he led the way to the wagon. Kindle couldn’t help but smile at his sudden change of heart and Ella’s renewed bafflement at it.

“Boys are stupid,” Kindle whispered to Ella as they started for the wagon as well. Ella gave her a confused look but let a chuckle replace it. Once they had all found
